Devil's Tower

The first major thing we encountered in Wyoming was the Devils Tower National Monument. It got its name because some interpreter back in the day messed up the interpretation. The Indians call it Bear Lodge but the white man calls it Devils Tower. You can read the history and legends of the tower here.

The tower is an astounding geologic feature that protrudes out of the rolling prairie surrounding the Black Hills. This site is considered Sacred to the Lakota and other tribes that have a connection to the area. Hundreds of parallel cracks make it one of the finest traditional crack climbing areas in North America. Devils Tower entices us to explore and define our place in the natural and cultural world.

We visited here in 07/2014.
